Cup Bearer in the Cycladic Art Museum in Athens

Visit the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens to see the fantastic collection of prehistoric figurines, sculptures, and items from Ancient Greece and Cyprus including the cup bearer.

In contrast to the static females, male sculptures (often with gender not specified) could be associated with action. A famous work has a seated figure raising a cup. (In the National Archaeological Museum are a couple of musicians.)

The “cup-bearer”

The almond-shaped head is set almost perpendicular to the cylindrical neck. There are no sexual characteristics. The left arm is bent at the elbow and the forearm brought onto the abdomen. The outstretched right arm, with the slightly flexed elbow, proffers a small beaker. The freely extended hand is an extremely rare feature in Cycladic sculpting
Special figurine of canonical type.
EC II period, Syros phase (2800-2300 BC).
