The Thinker

The Thinker Athens

The ‘Thinker’. Large solid clay figurine of a seated man from the area of Karditsa in Thessaly. Final Neolithic period (4500-3300 B.C.). It is unique, the largest so far neolithic artifact, exhibiting features of fully developed sculpture. In spite of some clumsiness in detail, it conveys the impression of a robust man looking upwards with manly bearing. The pronounced ithyphallic element – for the most part broken – along with the size of the figurine suggest a cultic character. It may well have represented an agrarian deity associated with the fertility of the land. Inv. no. 5894. National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
